Heavy Tomes

Time Passed In The Workhouse

Four hours I spent
Turning page after page.
One dusty book after another
As I sought by grandad’s name.

Searching for one date
22 February in 1912.
I was forced to bypass all others
And it seemed a slight.

Names and ages and places
And causes of incarceration and death.
My fingers lightly touched them
And I passed them by.
